How do I start planning a destination wedding ?
Planning a destination wedding
Where do I start?
Budget | Destination | Guests
These three factors are very important and really tight together. Your guests will affect your budget. Your budget will affect the choice of your destination and your destination will affect the number of guests. In short, they are all main items to think about when you start talking about having a destination wedding.
So let’s start, with budget. It’s very important to set a budget when you start, as they are millions of ideas regarding a wedding. Some of them are cheap but it can be very expensive for others. Once you’ve decided how much you want (and can) spend for your wedding, you’ll be able to choose a destination and set a day.
This is super important because if you have a specific day, prices might be different one month compared to another.
In New Zealand, the peak of the summer season is in January, so prices are higher compared to the low season. During the high season, prices can be twice or three times higher than during the low season.
In general terms, the sooner the better. Try to look for the big stuff as soon as possible, it’s going to be cheaper and you’ll have more choices.
If you have no idea how much cost a wedding in your destination country, contact a wedding planner specialized in destination weddings. He will be able to give you advices about budgets and everything else you need to know when planning a wedding abroad.
The world is yours ! Where do you want to get married ?
The country you’ll choose will held a special place in your heart. You’ll share unforgettable memories there but above all you’ll marry the love of your life <3 . You’d better choose the right country 😉
But don’t worry, here are a few questions to ask yourself when choosing a destination wedding :
- Do you want a summer wedding or a winter wedding ? Once you answer that question you’ll get a rough idea of what month you’ll have your wedding. Be careful though, seasons are different between the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere.
- Do you want to have a warm and sunny wedding day ? Even if you can’t choose the weather, some places are more likely to have sun then others.
- Do you want an english speaking country ?
- How much time can you leave ? If you can only get a week, it will be too short to go to New Zealand. There are at least 60 hours of flight both ways from France and remember to think about the time zones.
Like in a traditional wedding, you’ll have to choose a guest list, except if you go for an elopement.
In a destination wedding, the guest list is really important too. If you choose to held your wedding abroad, you’ll probably want to spend more time with the people that join you during this trip. You might also choose to have everybody sleeping in the same hotel so it’s easier for logistic. When you look for the right place, you’ll need to know approximately how many people will come at your wedding. Once you’ve decided who you want to invite, start asking around if these persons will come with you in this crazy adventure.
A year in advance (when possible), why don’t you send “save the date”, so your guests have all the informations and can start saving up for the trip. Also you’ll get more insight about who can come and who cannot.
Obviously, you can have last minute cancellation, but you cannot predict everything even with a traditional wedding.
Budget, guests and your destination country will be key factors that will help you start planning your destination wedding.
